Apple Campus 2 Permits Show $25M tunnel, $171M underground theater

New campus, anchored by spaceship-shaped building, will cost well in excess of $3 Billion.

Eight months after Apple Inc. received final approval from the city of Cupertino to build Apple Campus 2, construction on the Mac maker's new campus is generating the kind of interest usually reserved for a new iPhone launch. (There's even a Tumblr of shots taken from drones.)

An aerial image posted to the city of Cupertino's Apple Campus 2 project page shows excavation work well under way on the main building and parking structure. Now, recent city permits provide another window into the project's progress and cost. Records show contractors have pulled permits or submitted applications to construct most of the major components of AC2's first phase — something that won't be a surprise to anyone who has driven by and seen the incredible amount of machinery and manpower on the job.

Those project elements are valued at about $680 million, according to records submitted to the city.
