Rockler gears up for National Make a Gift Day with December 1 craft classes

Poll finds most people prefer handmade gifts over store-bought.

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware recently conducted a nationwide survey of 500 people, which found that over half of those surveyed would prefer to receive handmade gifts over those bought in a store. The findings come just ahead of National Make a Gift Day (December 3rd), which Rockler is recognizing by hosting its own Handmade Gift classes.

Findings from the survey include the following:

  • 54% of adults would prefer to receive a handmade gift over store-bought
  • 61% of women preferred handmade gifts vs. 47% of men
  • People over 65 years of age were the most likely to prefer handmade gifts (59%), followed by ages 35 to 44 (58%). People aged 25 to 34 were more likely to prefer store-bought gifts (51%)

To help celebrate National Make a Gift Day, Rockler stores nationwide will host Handmade Gift classes on Saturday, December 1st. Participants will use a lathe and other tools to create a unique handle for their choice of a bottle opener, an ice cream scoop, or a pizza cutter, resulting in a one-of-a-kind handmade gift.

The classes will be offered at four times on December 1st, with start times of 9:30 and 11:30 am as well as 1:30 and 3:30 pm. Because handle turning is relatively simple, it's ideal for anyone who wishes to participate, including those with little or no prior woodworking experience. Store staff will be on hand to answer questions and offer assistance. Each participant will leave with a completed utensil.

All 37 Rockler stores across the country will offer the Handmade Gift classes. Class size will be limited to six participants per session, so lots of one-on-one help will be available. Attendees under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult. The class will last approximately 45 to 60 minutes. The total cost of the class ranges from $35 to $45 depending on which utensil the attendee chooses to make.
