Guardian Reveals CR3-Edge Web SRL
Guardian has revealed what it believes represents the next generation of where SRLs are going, with better materials.

Per standards, lifelines need to be enhanced to manage being strung across a sharp edge.
Guardian’s new product, the CR3-Edge Web Self-Retracting Lifeline, is an eight-foot web leading edge. Traditionally, a leading edge is cable, which is heavier and does not always do well across rough, sharp surfaces.
The Class 2 device is a solution for leading edge applications, offering improved performance and weight.
“Our leading-edge web is made from proprietary webbing blend of Aramid and UHMWPE similar to Kevlar, the kind of material used in body armor to stop that kind of penetration,” said Chris Hillman, senior product manager at Guardian. “What you get from that is a web device, that one is about 40% lighter on users’ backs.”
The other benefit from the web is that it will slide smoothly across those rough edges because of how the material works. It is lighter and slides smoothly across multiple surfaces such as concrete, Type B roof decking and more.
“This is the next generation of where SRL lifelines are going, moving away from, from the heavier weight, getting into other materials that just do better than the old cable designs,” Hillman said.
In addition, he noted that the retraction on the web device is smoother because it leads straight into the housing, versus a cable line that can go in crooked and potentially cause damage.
“When you're wearing this SRL you don't have to concern yourself with what kind of environment you’re in, because you’re covered in both classes,” Hillman said, adding that the 8-foot length is likely just the start of the offering.
“An eight-foot personal SRL is where most of the marketplace sits today, and going forward, we'll see the marketplace shift to new lengths and new opportunities because of its capability, both above and all the way at leading edge at your feet,” he said.
Additional features of the CR3-Edge Web SRL-P include a dual-lock SRL connector for quick and easy installation onto most full-body harnesses, a lightweight energy absorber and housing for durability and comfort and multiple hook options.
“The CR3-Edge Web SRL-P has all the capability and safety of a cable lifeline at a fraction of the weight, mitigating worker fatigue and allowing users to be more efficient in the most demanding conditions,” said Christopher Hillmann, Guardian SRL product manager.
