Portable Electric Tools: DEWALT DWE402 and DWE402N 4.5 Inch Compact Small Angle Grinders

DEWALT announces the launch of its new 4 ½” Small Angle Grinders (DWE402 and DWE402N), ideal for professionals who need to perform a variety of applications in tight spaces such as grinding and beveling steel, grinding welds, cutting pipe and steel plate and concrete surface prep.

“The new 4 ½” Small Angle Grinders raise the bar for the compact small angle grinder class with improvements in the key focus areas durability, performance, ergonomics, and ease of use, compared to the DEWALT Small Angle Grinder D28402 and D28402N that the DWE402 and the DWE402N are replacing,” said Sean Kelly, Group Product Manager.

Key improvements include a Dust Ejection System that has been taken to a new level of design and functionality. A new motor platform has been developed yielding 40% more copper than the motor on the D28402, upgrading the grinder to 11 Amps and adding another 200 max watts of output power. Average temp rises have also been reduced compared to the D28402 and the body circumference is still smallest in class at 194mm*. (Note: *Competitive class is defined by key competitors Bosch AG40-85, Makita 9564, Milwaukee 6147-30 and Metabo W11-125.)

Durability and long tool life is the number one concern of professionals who use grinders. A detriment to grinders is abrasion from debris and particulates that are ingested into the grinder while in use, when the grinder pulls air through the motor to cool. The new 4 ½” Small Angle Grinders feature a newly redesigned and patented Dust Ejection System. This feature filters debris from the air allowing mostly clean air to pass across the motor leading to longer motor life.

First introduced on the D28402 Small Angle Grinder, DEWALT’S patented Dust Ejection System feature required power from the motor to operate. The new design of the Dust Ejection System on the DWE402 does not require power from the motor. This allows the motor to be protected without compromising performance.

With these new grinders, users will experience, on average, 65% longer brush life compared to the D28402 and 2X the motor life of the Bosch AG40-85, based on accelerated testing.

For most grinding applications, performance is critical. Power is needed to not only complete applications quickly but complete them for long periods without overheating the grinder. In 2005, when DEWALT launched the D28402 Small Angle Grinder as a next generation motor with a patented 4 piece field design, the extra copper allowed the motor to stay small and compact but generate high power. With the new Small Angle Grinders, DEWALT is introducing phase 2 of the Next Generation Motor. The new motor has the 4-piece field introduced in phase 1 plus 40% more copper now added to the armature providing even more power.

“The new 4 ½” Small Angle Grinders delivers the durability and performance users need, but what makes DEWALT different with these new small angle grinders is that we refused to trade off ergonomics in two ways,” said Kelly. “The 194mm body circumference remains class leading**. Additionally, the new motor design along with the total system approach to increasing efficiency, the new grinders have a 35% cooler average temp rise on the gear case and a 30% cooler average temp rise on the field case (body of the grinder) compared to previous DEWALT models.”

The new grinders are also designed to be easier to use. A patent pending feature, the One-Touch guard allows for the guard to be adjusted in a single, fluid motion. Keyless guards and detent style guards found on competitive units require 2 or more actions to adjust the guard.

At 4.6 lbs and a circumference of 194mm, the slim, ergonomic body design allows for comfortable use without sacrificing the performance that users want and need to perform tough cutting and grinding applications.

The DWE402 and DWE402N are expected to retail for approximately $89.00 and will be available wherever DEWALT products are sold. The tool will come standard with a three-year limited warranty, one-year free service contract and 90-day money-back guarantee.

The new small angle grinder will also be available with a slide switch (DWE4214) in 2015.
