Conney Safety acquires Mettam Safety Supply

Conney Safety Products announced that it has completed the purchase of Mettam Safety Supply Company of Danville, Ill.

“The combination of these two companies will be very powerful. Mettam’s large customer relationships will benefit from Conney’s premier inventory and distribution capabilities, catalog, Web presence, and information technology infrastructure. We hope to find several more companies like Mettam to partner with over the next few years,” said Michael Wessner, chief executive officer of Conney Safety Products.

Nan Mettam, president of Mettam Safety Supply Company, said the acquisition will enable the company founded by her father more than 30 years ago to better serve its customers.

"Looking toward the future, we realized that we needed a larger platform in order to best service our customers. We believe Conney’s model provides the size and resources necessary to be successful while continuing Mettam’s legacy as a technically savvy safety products specialist. Conney has a strong track record of making combinations like this work flawlessly. I don’t think we could have found a more ideal partner,” she said.

Madison, Wis.-based Conney Safety Products is owned by its management team and CI Capital Partners, a New York private equity firm.

“Over the last four years, the Conney team has done an outstanding job of building and positioning Conney for growth, both organically and through strategic acquisitions. We believe Mettam Safety will be an excellent addition to the Conney platform,” said Thomas Ritchie, Managing Director at CI Capital Partners.

This is the second acquisition for Conney Safety. The company purchased Elvin Safety of Eden Prairie, Minn., in 2010.

"Elvin was a superb regional distributor with a number of large national profile customers. We retained the customers and added services and resources," explained Chuck Moyer, chief operating officer. "Mettam is an extremely successful and strong regional distributor. We hope to do an even better job here as we've been able to evolve our model with the Elvin experience. I think it is important to understand that our approach to combining companies is to adopt the best of both. Mettam has some really excellent practices we expect to adopt across Conney."
