Convention Hotel Construction Picks Up
Five major convention center hotel project are expected to boost demand in their markets.
The recent uptick of hotel construction in the United States is bringing with it a slate of new convention center headquarter hotels. Commercial real estate investment firm Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) counts five such properties scheduled to open by 2017.
On the docket next year are the 1,012-room JW Marriott Austin and the 700-room Spokane Convention Center Hotel.
2016 will bring the 1,200-room Marriott Marquis Chicago, the 1,000-room Marriott Marquis Houston Downtown and the 600-room Hilton in Cleveland.
Recent openings include the 1,175-room Marriott Marquis Washington D.C. (May 2014) and the 800-room Omni Hotel Nashville (September 2013).
Such activity mirrors an increase in development more broadly. The total number of hotel rooms under construction is up 42.6% as of 30 April, according to data from STR, parent company of Hotel News Now.
