Dewalt Changes the Game

New 60-volt battery platform promises to revolutionize the cordless jobsite.

Got a fresh cup of coffee? Go grab one, this story is over 4,000 words and you will want to read them.

In what it believes is a true game changer for the industry, DEWALT's new dual-voltage FLEXVOLT battery plaform operates at either 20 or 60 volts max depending on the tool it is running. The battery automatically switches between parallel or series current flow to provide the maximum power for the tool it is powering. The FLEXVOLT battery is also backwards compatible with existing DEWALT 20V MAX* cordless tools.

Companies love to tout their new products as revolutionary, disruptive and gee-whiz game changers, but the reality often falls a bit short of the buzz. Sometimes way short. All of which made the DeWalt/Porter-Cable/Stanley/Proto/Black & Decker combined 2016-17 roll-out last week in Baltimore all the more notable for its high number of successes and new releases with the heft, feel and smell of clear winners.

Just during the DEWALT portion of the two-day event, the company announced more than 30 innovative new 20V MAX tools launching yet this year and over 100 new skus of blades and accessories. But the real story is even bigger.

The Next Big Thing — 60 Volts!

DEWALT led off with the big news of the show, and maybe the big news of the year, the all new FLEXVOLT 20/60-volt battery platform.

Rather than simply up the voltage ante in the cordless wars, DEWALT is attempting to leapfrog its competitors with a different approach. The FLEXVOLT system is the world’s first battery that automatically changes voltage when the user changes tools. When a user plugs the new battery into an existing 20V MAX cordless power tool, the tool benefits from up to 4x longer runtime (3X more power than DEWALT 18V NiCad batteries).

But when the user plugs the new battery into one of DEWALT's all new brushless FLEXVOLT tools, the battery automatically switches to operate at 60 volts maximum (54 volts nominal). Sharp readers will note that this new battery platform is backwards compatible with existing 20V MAX DEWALT tools. Neat trick there.

The new DEWALT 60V MAX* 7-1/4” Circular Saw (DCS575) can make up to 339 cuts per charge in 2x4 SPF lumber on a single charge with one FLEXVOLT battery.
The XEWALT 60V MAX* Reciprocating Saw (DCS388) offers three times the power of the 18V DCS385.
For roughing in plumbing and electrical, the DEWALT 60V MAX* 1/2-inch VSR Stud and Joist Drill (DCD460) is ideal in use on double, triple, four, and five 2X wood as well as engineered lumber such as Microllam beam.
The cordless 60V MAX* 8-1/4” Table Saw (DCS7485) will rip up to 302 linear feet of 3/4-inch OSB on a single charge.
The new DEWALT 60V MAX* 4.5” to 6” Grinder (DCG414) will handle up to 126 cuts of 1/2-inch rebar on a single charge using a FLEXVOLT battery and 6-inch FLEXVOLT cutting wheel.

Two FLEXVOLT batteries, a 6.0Ah battery (DCB606) available in the fall of 2016 and a 9.0Ah battery (DCB609) available in early 2017, power the lineup of brushless 60V MAX* and 120V MAX* FLEXVOLT tools.

The new 60V MAX tools initially include five brushless tools include a 7 1/4-inch Circular Saw (DCS575), 4 1/2- to 6-inch Grinder (DCG414),  Reciprocating Saw (DCS388), 1/2-inch VSR Stud and Joist Drill (DCD460) and an 8 1/4-inch Table Saw (DCS7485). All of them are expected to drop in Q3.

For an even neater trick, the new battery can also be doubled up to power 120V MAX* FLEXVOLT tools.

Hold it. Did we just say 120V tools? Yes, we did. So far, there are just two: a 12-inch Fixed Head Compound Miter Saw (DHS716) and a 12-inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw (DHS790), but more tools in both the 60V and 120V MAX formats are on the way.

The key to this technology is the ability of the FLEXVOLT battery to automatically change voltage depending on whether it’s being used in a 20V MAX* or 60V MAX* tool (in addition to its doubling capacity for use in 120V MAX tools).

What this means on the job site is that high-power tool applications that previously could only be accomplished by corded tools can now be performed with the DEWALT FLEXVOLT system of cordless tools. During the event, DEWALT staffers repeatedly stressed that the new platform enables a new work paradigm, the cordless job site.

“The impact of the FLEXVOLT system will be felt throughout the construction industry on each and every job site," said Frank Mannarino, president of DEWALT's Professional Products Group. This new platform packs the power required for heavy-duty applications, makes it easy to exchange corded tools for cordless, and ensures that our existing 20V MAX* users get the benefit of added runtime without making the 20V MAX* system obsolete.”

The new 1800 Watt Portable Power Station (DCB1800) allows for AC power in remote locations for convenient portable power. Able to run most corded tools, it provides 1,800 Watts (15 amps) continuous power and 3,600 Watts peak power.
The 20V MAX* Bluetooth Radio Charger (DCR025) has a Bluetooth range of up to 100 feet and can be controlled remotely from a smartphone or directly on the radio.

20V MAX* Power Accessories

Also capable of operating off of the FLEXVOLT battery platform are new 20V MAX* tools, including a Portable Power Station (DCB1800), a 20V MAX* Bluetooth Radio Charger (DCR025) and a 20V MAX* Bluetooth LED Area Light (DCL070).

The Bluetooth LED Area Light deserves special note here. Although its initial impression is that of a squat, armless Dalek with too much plastic skin, it reveals itself to be capable and ingenious. Its squat cone-like form hides the fact that, just like a traffic cone, these lighting units are stackable and their bulbous bases provide almost as much tip resistance as that famous bobbing job site light.

However, this DEWALT version uses directional LEDs that are far more impact resistant than older forms of lighting, and the light's Bluetooth capability enables a user to turn it on, off, up or down to suit the site's needs without having to actually touch the light itself. This comes in handy when the lights are positioned up high on a site in a location that might require a ladder to adjust either their intensity or direction.

Harkening back to the day when LEDs on drills were first introduced to a dubious contractor public, it bears noting that the idea of turning your job site lighting on or off with your phone could well catch on, too.

The new 1800 Watt Portable Power Station (DCB1800) allows for AC power in remote locations for convenient portable power. Able to run most corded tools, it provides 1,800 Watts (15 amps) continuous power and 3,600 Watts peak power. The DCB1800 runs on four DEWALT 20V MAX* batteries, and for high power applications, four 20V MAX* 3.0Ah DEWALT Batteries (DCB200) or higher amp hour are recommended to provide the best results.

Not only can the 1800 Watt Portable Power Station power a corded tool remotely, but it also becomes a multi-port parallel charger for up to four DEWALT 20V MAX* Batteries when plugged into a wall outlet via extension cord (sold separately).

Compact and lightweight, the 1800 Watt Portable Power Station weighs just 18 pounds (without batteries) and is easily portable. Without the need for gas to run, there are no fumes or carbon monoxide emitted from the device.

In addition, the 1800 Watt Portable Power Station can be used to provide temporary power in areas where noise is restricted such as a job site with strict regulations or even camping and tailgating. With an integrated temperature-controlled cooling fan and heavy-duty roll cage, the Portable Power Station is a durable and convenient power solution for a variety of uses.

One of the more visually arresting new products is DEWALT's 20V MAX* Bluetooth LED Large Area Light (DCL070). Emulating traffic cones (but larger), these units are stackable to save space in truck beds and can be controlled remotely with a smart phone.

The new Fast Charger (DCB118) can charge DEWALT 20V MAX* batteries in 60 minutes or less. This charger is fan-cooled to reduce charge time on high-capacity DEWALT 20V MAX* batteries.

It weighs just 1.5 pounds and is small and compact for storage and transport. It can be wall-mounted to reduce job site clutter and LED diagnostics indicate charging status and a hot/cold pack delay.

The 1800 Watt Portable Power Station is available bare for approximately $399 MSRP (DCB1800B) or kitted with three DCB204 batteries and one DCB606 battery for $599 MSRP (DCB1800M3T1).

It is also capable of attaching to the DEWALT Tough System storage system, available separately for easy transport.

The Fast Charger (DCB118) is available for approximately $79 MSRP. Each product is available this fall where DEWALT products are sold and comes standard with a 90-day money back, one-year free service, and three-year limited warranty.

The 20V MAX* Bluetooth Radio Charger (DCR025) provides premium sound running off of most DEWALT slide pack batteries and charges DEWALT 12V MAX*, 20V MAX* and FLEXVOLT batteries at 3 amps when plugged into AC power. With a Bluetooth range of up to 100 feet, the radio provides loud, clear sound and can be controlled remotely from a smartphone or directly on the radio.

The radio has 2 additional AC outlets on the side of the unit for added versatility on the jobsite. An oversized device storage box offers USB charging and auxiliary ports that can charge phones and devices via USB while powered either by AC or Battery Power. Finally, a heavy-duty roll cage with built in handles protects the radio from rough job site conditions and allows for easy portability.
