Rex-Cut Abrasives invests nearly $1M in capital equipment

New abrasive material manufacturing line will increase efficiency and productivity.

Rex-Cut Abrasives is investing nearly $1 million in a new abrasive material line that will improve manufacturing efficiency and productivity at its Fall River, Massachusetts plant.

Rex-Cut Abrasives, the oldest and primary manufacturer of cotton fiber abrasive grinding and finishing products, is investing in a new abrasive material manufacturing line. This equipment investment will allow Rex-Cut to product high quality abrasive material and finished goods well into the future.

Since 1928, Rex-Cut has made a proprietary abrasive material using a unique process that embeds grain into non-woven cotton fabric. Material varying in hardness and grit are produced to manufacture finished goods that are used in grinding, blending, and deburring applications in metalworking industries.

All of Rex-Cut’s cotton fiber products, including type 1 wheels, type 27 wheels, mounted points, and finishing sticks are all produced with this abrasive material made right in its Fall River, Massachusetts manufacturing plant.

This new system will increase efficiency and productivity throughout the abrasive material making process. This investment will also improve product consistency and quality as well as manufacturing longevity.

“This is by far the largest capital investment project that we have embarked on for the sustainability of our business and future generations of employee owners,” says Bob Costa, company President. The shutdown and dismantling of the old-line is complete and new equipment is now being installed. “The biggest challenge was producing surplus material to support Rex-Cut’s order requirements during the making line changeover while at the same time, keeping up with increased business conditions.”

The new making line is being installed over the next 3 to 4 months at Rex-Cut’s main facility located at 960 Airport Rd., Fall River Massachusetts and is replacing a material making line that was built in the 1920’s.

Rex-Cut Abrasives is proud to be a part of Fall River’s rich textile history and the manufacturing community providing jobs for 90 years. None of which would have been possible without the talent, hard work, and dedication of its employees.

Rex-Cut Abrasives provides the Metalworking industry with high performance, non-woven cotton fiber and other premium abrasive products, improving the daily grind for a worldwide customer network. The company is the oldest and primary manufacturer of cotton-fiber abrasive grinding and finishing products in the world.
