Survey shows Michigan faces the worst construction labor shortage in the U.S.

AGC/Sage survey shows 79 percent of survey respondents cite worker shortages and worker quality as main concerns.

A new survey shows that the labor shortage in Michigan is more pronounced than elsewhere around the country.

According to data released Wednesday by the Arlington, Va.-based Associated General Contractors of America trade organization and Sage Construction and Real Estate, which has its North American headquarters in Atlanta, almost four of five Michigan contractors who responded to the survey cite worker shortages (79 percent) and worker quality (79 percent) as their biggest concerns, compared to 72 percent and 75 percent nationally, respectively.

Subcontractor availability and quality is also high on the mind in Michigan, with 66 percent concerned, compared to just 44 percent nationally.

The survey had 956 responses, with 29 coming from Michigan.

Larry Brinker Jr., president of Detroit-based L.S. Brinker Construction, said his company is also concerned.

"As far as worker quality, I wouldn't say that's a No. 1 concern, it's more the shortage in the trades, based on the high number of trades workers retiring, in addition to the lower number of younger people going into the trades," he said.
