Slag Cement Association Celebrates 20 Years

SCA is celebrating 20 years of providing resources for using slag cement in concrete construction.

The Slag Cement Association (SCA) is excited to announce it is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. SCA serves as the leading source of knowledge for slag cement and slag blended cements through promotion, education and technology development. SCA communicates the performance and environmental benefits of these cementitious materials through the support and participation of its member companies.

“SCA is proud of what it has accomplished in its 20 years of service. Slag cement offers many benefits when used in concrete construction such as durability, sustainability, improved finishability and much more. SCA provides many resources exemplifying these benefits and are free to the industry such as technical information sheets, webinars and videos, life cycle assessment calculator, Environmental Product Declaration for slag cement and the Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards Program,” said Drew Burns, SCA Executive Director.

In addition, Burns recently presented long-time SCA staff member John Melander with the SCA Distinguished Service Award. Melander served as the SCA Executive Director from 2013 through 2017 and is currently Technical Consultant to SCA. His work for SCA has focused on developing and disseminating technology on the use of slag cement and slag blended cements in concrete.

"He was instrumental in coordinating the first Environmental Product Declaration for slag cement. Thank you, John, for your many years of dedicated service to SCA," said Burns.

Another milestone for the SCA this year is the passing of the gavel for the position of SCA Board President. Ed Griffith (St. Marys Cement) just finished his term at the end of last year, and Lori Tiefenthaler (Lehigh Hanson) has stepped into the role.

In recognition of its 20th anniversary, SCA will be hosting its first Slag Cement School event at the American Concrete Institute World Headquarters, May 11-12, 2022. The event will include educational presentations on slag cement use in concrete construction, sustainable resources available and other presentations on the benefits of use. Members will demonstrate how to use SCA’s newly updated life cycle assessment calculator for slag cement.
