Job Sites: ESAB and NYC Constructors Celebrate NYC Building with 170,000 Pounds of Field Welds
The new 60-story JPMorgan Chase headquarters uses 94,000 tons of structural steel.
The New York City skyline is defined by iconic skyscrapers that result from the collaboration between world-class companies.
Two collaborators that celebrated during a recent “topping off” ceremony of the new JPMorgan Chase headquarters at 270 Park Avenue include NYC Constructors, a subsidiary of DBM Global Inc. and a leading steel erector for world class high-rise construction, and ESAB (NYSE: ESAB), a leading global provider of welding filler metals and welding and cutting equipment.
Executives at the topping off ceremony signed the final steel beam before it was hoisted into place on top of the 1,388-foot, 60-story tall building.
“We are proud to have partnered with ESAB to successfully complete another high-rise in New York City,” says Barry King, President of NYC Constructors, “At just under 94,000 tons of structural steel, 270 Park Avenue required 170,000 pounds of field welds, a staggering amount we could not have achieved without the support of ESAB. We look forward to a continued partnership with ESAB on future projects.”
Previous collaborations include the World Trade Center Tower 1 (1,776 ft.), One Vanderbilt (1,401 ft.), the Javits Center 1.2 million-sq.-ft. expansion, The Spiral at Hudson Yards (1,005 ft.) and the JFK Airport New Terminal One. All projects used ESAB’s Coreshield 6 (AWS E70T-6) and Coreshield 8 (AWS E71T-8) self-shielded flux cored arc welding (FCAW) electrodes. These electrodes meet all requirements for “Seismic Certified” filler metals according to FEMA 353 specifications, as well as the requirements of the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1/D1.1M:2020 Structural Welding Code – Steel.
“NYC Constructors is renowned for the quality of its welds, which directly relates to its reputation for keeping projects on or ahead of schedule. ESAB helps make that possible with a custom quality control program that includes testing every lot of Coreshield filler metal they use,” says Eleanor Lukens, ESAB, President of the Americas. “Coreshield gives welders 100 percent confidence in its weldability and in the mechanical properties and chemistry of the weld metal deposited, a real advantage when working on super-tall buildings such as 270 Park Avenue.”
Winston Sturge, Quality Control Manager for NYC Constructors, says that “Over the last decade, we have made millions of pounds of field welds with a defect rate that approaches zero. We attribute that success to NYC Constructors’ culture of quality and safety, our collaboration with ESAB and the skill of journeymen from Iron Workers Local 40.”
Coreshield 6 (for flat and horizontal welding) and Coreshield 8 (for all-position welding) combine strength and exceptional weld quality with high welder appeal. They are considered more user-friendly than other FCAW electrodes in their class because they have a smoother and more stable arc, lower spatter and easy-to-remove slag. They also have a wider operating range, which makes it easier for welders to fine-tune parameter settings to their personal preference while also making a sound weld and adhering to Welding Procedure Specifications.
To further improve welding uptime on the 270 Park Avenue project, NYC Constructors and ESAB also collaborated with a company called NYC Gloves to custom develop a flux cored MIG gun with components that better resist the heat and wear of high-volume welding.
“The enhanced design extends gun life by at least twice as long and contact tip life by up to 600% compared to standard flux cored guns. That promotes productivity while also promoting weld performance consistency, both added advantages for large structural steel welding products,” says Jason Chadee, President, NYC Gloves.
