California Concert Venue Features Bilco Acoustical Smoke Vents
A new indoor concert and entertainment venue in California improved its fire safety risk by incorporating acoustical smoke vents from Bilco into its design.
The Venue at Thunder Vally Casino Resort in Lincoln, California includes Bilco acoustical smoke vents as a safety feature. |
The Venue, which hosts musical acts, comedic performances and sporting events, is a $100 million project that includes a 150,000-square-foot state-of-the-art entertainment building that includes 4,500 seats.
Construction on the site, part of the Thunder Valley Casino Resort, began in 2021. Owned by the United Auburn Indian Community, a Native American tribe indigenous to the Sacramento region, the Venue opened with a star-studded line-up including The Eagles, Bruno Mars and Santana.
“The United Auburn Indian Community is proud to have the ability to continue to position Thunder Valley as Northern California’s premier entertainment destination,’’ said Gene Whitehouse, chairman of the United Auburn Indian Community. “The Venue is the future of entertainment at Thunder Valley, and we look forward to attracting big-name performers year-round.”
Architects at OTJ specified six acoustical smoke vents from Bilco for the project. The motorized smoke vents guard against noise intrusion while providing the security of automatic smoke venting. Smoke vents protect property and help firefighters bring a fire under control by removing smoke, heat and gases from a burning building.
General contractor on the project, McCarthy Building Companies, brought in Lawson Mechanical Contractors to install the Bilco vents, provided by Bilco’s regional manufacturer’s representative Collier Building Specialties.
“We have used Bilco smoke vents in several projects,’’ said Don Anderson, project manager at Lawson Mechanical Contractors. “We know they’re a good product and they were a good fit for this application.”
Acoustical smoke vents are frequently used at performance venues that seek to limit outside noise. Bilco’s smoke vents carry OITC-46 and STC-50 sound ratings.
The OITC figure is the preferred rating when addressing sound insulation from exterior noise, as it rates the transmission of sound between outdoor and indoor spaces. STC measures the extent to which sound is prevented from being transferred from one area to another.
In addition to sound reduction, smoke vents play a critical role in saving lives and reducing property damage in the event of a fire. Bilco vents spring open upon the melting of a fusible link, allowing smoke, heat and gas to escape and decreasing the possibility of smoke inhalation to building occupants.
The Bilco vents are engineered with gas spring operators to open covers in snow and wind. Internal dampers ensure the covers open at a controlled rate. In addition, the vents are fully gasketed for weather tightness and are constructed with corrosion-resistant materials.
