Recognized as both a visionary and entrepreneur, he built the Lawless Group with his father Darrell and wife Janis nearly 50 years ago.
Over the years, he started several other companies including Pro Line Products, Inc., and seven Lawless sales agencies across the country. He also acquired companies such as OVERTIME and ProLine Chemical & Plastics. Through decades of dedication, he launched new enterprises, acquired companies, and fostered relationships that shaped the company’s legacy and his impact on the industry.
“The vision of Richard Lawless and the Lawless Group, inspired by our 50-year plan, is to build a legacy of trusted service, sustainability and industry leadership,” said Justin Vailes, Lawless Group. "Richard embodied the spirit of the Lawless Group, dedicated to his family and leading with exceptional vision.”
Vailes noted that Richard treated every employee as part of the extended family, and his generosity, integrity, and unwavering commitment made a meaningful impact on everyone he met.
“His legacy will continue to inspire us all for years to come,” Vailes noted.
Richard’s brothers, Bob and Gary Lawless, have also contributed significantly to the organization’s success over the years. His daughter Stefani and son Vaughn remain actively engaged in the business and are committed to carrying on his vision, ensuring that Richard’s legacy continues to guide and inspire the Lawless Group.
A Lawless Group LinkedIn post states that Richard’s true legacy goes far beyond business success.
Per the post, “He was a devoted family man and a leader who treated employees as extended family. His generosity, kindness, and passion for people touched countless lives, leaving a mark that will never fade. Richard’s spirit will always be the driving force behind who we are and all that we do.”
In late July, the Lawless Group announced a strategic realignment of its national sales organization, shifting from a regional model into two primary division, “East” and “West.”
Company officials stated at the time that the new sales organization would reduce complexities and enhance its organizational agility, as well as allow it to leverage its warehouses nationwide to ease freight costs and shorten delivery times.
As part of the realignment, Vailes was named as the company’s CEO, succeeding Jack Templin after three years. Vailes had been president of Lawless Group East.
“This strategic realignment reflects our commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and long-term growth,” Vailes said.
Eric Stone was named general manager, while retaining his role as president of Lawless Group West. In addition, Dave Hall, Lawless Group East vice president added a general manager title, while Mike Katz was promoted to senior vice president of business development.
All Lawless Group sales, operations, logistics and marketing leadership now report directly to Vailes.
The Lawless Group’s deepest condolences extend to the entire Lawless family and to all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with Richard Lawless. The family kindly requests privacy during this difficult time.
