“I am deeply honored to be elected a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute,” ElGawady said. “This recognition reflects the collective achievements of my students, collaborators and mentors who share a commitment to advancing resilient and sustainable infrastructure. It strengthens my resolve to continue serving the profession and preparing the next generation of engineers to lead with innovation and purpose.”

ACI is an international organization that develops and shares knowledge on concrete materials, design and construction that has approximately 40,000 members across 120 countries.

Fellows must have at least 15 years of ACI membership and are selected based on outstanding contributions to the field and significant service to the institute.

An expert in concrete structures and their performance under extreme conditions, ElGawady is recognized by a Stanford University analysis as being among the world’s top 2% most-cited civil engineering researchers both in recent years and throughout his career.

He joined the Missouri S&T faculty in 2012 and was promoted to professor in 2018. Last year, he served as interim chair of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at S&T.

The year prior, ElGawady was on sabbatical from S&T and was the deputy nuclear portfolio lead in the Operational Energy-Innovation office for the U.S. Department of Defense.

He previously held academic positions in Egypt, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia and Japan, as well as the United States.

ElGawady earned a Ph.D. in structural engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne and both a master’s degree in structural engineering and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cairo University in Egypt.
