FEIN, inventor of the power tool, has introduced the FEIN KBH 25, the world’s first hand-held annular drilling system for the metalworking market. The system combines the benefits of a hand-held power drill with a carbide-tipped annular cutter to enable fast, easy and accurate holes of up to one inch (25 mm) diameter with up to ¾ inch (20 mm) depth of cut.
Its ergonomic design minimizes operator fatigue allowing for fast, accurate holemaking even in hard to reach places inaccessible to conventional drilling tools. The system works on all ferrous and non-ferrous materials, on painted and heavily oxidized surfaces as well as contoured surfaces.
The FEIN KBH 25 patent-pending drilling technology (hand drill with carbide annular bits) avoids unnecessary material machining and reduces the manual effort of the operator. The HSS pilot bit only drills as long as necessary to ensure hole accuracy then disengages as soon as the annular cutter meets the material. After the hole is complete at cutter breakthrough a spring pushes the pilot bit forward, ejecting the slug of material made by the annular cutter. The drills have a keyless FEIN QuickIN-PLUS tool holding system for fast tool changes. The KBH 25 is up to three times faster when compared to hole saws and as much as five times faster when compared with conventional twist drills.
FEIN carbide annular cutters feature a special tooth geometry with a cut width of only 0.11 inch (2.8 mm) ensuring optimum productivity with reduced feed pressure. In addition, FEIN offers a carbide cutter line with Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) surface coating, which is extremely heat resistant and provides for excellent glide properties. The coating increases tool life and provides up to 20% productivity improvement when compared to uncoated bits. These cutters have FEIN QuickIN PLUS shanks.
Two types of carbide hole saws are available that have the KBH 25 QuickIN PLUS tool shanks. The standard hole saw for materials up to 3/16″ (4mm) thickness are available in 26 diameters from 9/16″ (14mm) up to 2-1/8″ (54mm). A series of hole saws with a deeper throat for drilling pipe or curved surfaces in these same diameters are also available.
The KBH 25 weighs only 7 pounds and maintains a constant speed and enables consistent feed rates even under heavy loads. It has a 1200 W high-performance motor that delivers 0-520 RPM with either forward of reverse rotation. The tacho electronics maintain a constant speed for optimal cutting, even under heavy loads. A metal gear head and glass-fiber reinforced, distortion-free barrel-type motor housing adds to robustness of the unit. For operator safety, the system is equipped with a torque slip clutch, which immediately disconnects the drive shaft if the core bit jams. An optional heavy-duty plastic carrying case is also available.
