William Halstead Hersey, inventor and founder of PLS Pacific Laser systems, died on April 20, 2014. Bill was awarded U.S. and foreign patents for a number of self-leveling laser tools, known as the “PLS” brand used worldwide in commercial construction.

Bill was born Feb. 4, 1945 to Roscoe M. Hersey and Margaret Halstead Hersey in New York, New York. He spent most of his childhood in Baltimore, MD and attended the University of Pittsburgh.

Bill worked construction for 25 years in the field and later in an office as an estimator. His frustration with plumb bobs in windy conditions led to his desire to create reliable, easy-to use, laser tools for skilled trades people.

His first laser tool, the PLS5, was patented in 1992. Numerous new laser tools and patents followed. Bill took a keen interest in all aspects of the manufacture of PLS tools, mastering CNC machines and their programming among the many other details involved in managing the company.
