California Builders Prepare for Title 24 Changes

Continuous insulation is required on exterior walls beginning this month.

This month environmentally conscious California is changing how exterior walls in residential and commercial construction are built. In an effort to reduce its energy consumption, Californiahas increased the level of required energy efficiency in residential construction. These new requirements can be achieved by incorporating continuous insulation into the exterior stucco system.

In order to meet these new challenges established by Title 24's Energy Code, architects, builders, and contractors are relying more on one coat stucco systems, specially designed for use with exterior continuous rigid insulation board. The Diamond Wall One Coat System by Southern California-based Omega Products International is the leading one coat system on the market.

"Insulating one-coat stucco systems are a great option, and perhaps the most cost effective way to meet these new requirements," said Kevin Wensel, director of product development at Omega Products. "One coat stucco incorporates a rigid insulation board under the lath and plaster for increased energy efficiency. These systems have been successfully used in a variety of climates in residential and commercial projects for more than thirty years, and can be installed generally at a cost that is similar to traditional three coat stucco."
